Dutch PM defends tax cut seen benefiting Shell, Unilever, UK investors

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday returned to parliament for the second time in a week to defend a tax cut that benefits Anglo-Dutch multinationals and British equity investors in general. Rutte's unexpected decision to scrap the 15 percent dividend withholding tax has fed into a mood of public resentment at large companies widely perceived as being taxed too lightly. Populist lawmaker Geert Wilders loudly questioned why the Dutch should approve a measure that benefits foreigners.

New Akzo Nobel boss pursues $30 billion deal with Axalta

AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Dutch paints maker Akzo Nobel, seeking to recover after rejecting a takeover offer and issuing two profit warnings, is discussing a merger with smaller U.S. rival Axalta Coating Systems Ltd to create a $30 billion company. Akzo, the maker of Dulux paint, said on Monday it was in "constructive talks" about a "merger of equals" in what would be the first major deal by Chief Executive Thierry Vanlancker, who took over in July after Akzo spurned a 26 billion euro ($30.2 billion) offer from U.S. rival PPG Industries. Reuters reported on Friday that Akzo had approached Axalta about a possible merger, sending Axalta's shares 17 percent higher.

Exclusive: Akzo Nobel approaches Axalta about possible merger - sources

FRANKFURT/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dutch paints and coatings giant Akzo Nobel NV (AKZO.AS) has approached U.S. rival Axalta Coating Systems Ltd (AXTA.N) to discuss a possible merger that would create a global coatings giant, according to sources familiar with the matter. Akzo Nobel's move indicates that its new CEO Thierry Vanlancker is continuing to look for big deals as a way to buttress the company, after it managed to fend off a takeover approach by PPG Industries (PPG.N) earlier this year. Philadelphia-based Axalta is in the early stages of considering a deal with Akzo Nobel, and there is no certainty that the two companies will agree to a merger, one of the sources said on Friday.

Akzo Nobel shareholder USS withdraws board appointment proposal

British universities pension scheme fund manager USS said on Thursday it planned to withdraw a proposal to nominate Eric Meurice as a supervisory board member of Dutch paints and coatings giant Akzo Nobel (AKZO.AS). Last week Akzo's supervisory board said it did not support the proposal to appoint Meurice, the former chief executive of Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML (ASML.AS). Akzo therefore wanted shareholders to choose between Meurice and its own nominee, German plastics producer Covestro's (1COV.DE) chief executive, Patrick Thomas.

Akzo cuts profit goal for second time since fending off PPG

Paint maker Akzo Nobel (AKZO.AS) warned its operating profit would not grow at all this year, in a further retreat from performance promises made to investors to fend off a 26-billion-euro (£23.2 billion) takeover approach in May. The Dutch company blamed the downgrade in full-year earnings forecasts, the second in two months, on disruption caused by hurricane Harvey, rising raw materials costs and "headwinds" at its marine coatings business as the offshore oil industry remains weak. The maker of Dulux paint insisted on Wednesday it would meet other promises made during its defence against suitor PPG Industries (PPG.N), including the sale or IPO of its Specialty Chemicals Division by early next year and the payment of a one-time dividend of 1 billion euros on Dec. 7.

MORNING BID EUROPE-ECB baby steps - a warning from Germany

Among the features of yesterday's press conference by European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi were repeated questions by German journalists about the negative side-effects of the bank's stimulus programme, which it is now clear the ECB wants to wind down as gradually as it can. Draghi was adamant he saw absolutely no evidence of any such harm, but now the head of Germany's foremost economic institute, Ifo, is warning of a return to the euro crisis if the ECB does not change course soon. The debate is likely to develop today with a host of ECBers, including the Bundesbank's Jens Weidmann, scheduled to speak.
