Akzo Nobel announces $556 million share buyback as core profit jumps

Dutch paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel NV on Wednesday announced a 500 million euro ($556 million) share buyback, after reporting a 23% jump in third-quarter core profit driven by cost saving measures and higher product prices. Akzo reported an adjusted operating income of 300 million euros for the three months through September, slightly below the average expectation of analysts polled by the company. "Our profit improvement in the third quarter was strong, even though we had to deal with softer end market demand", Chief Executive Officer Thierry Vanlancker said.

Akzo Nobel's second quarter profit surges despite car industry weakness

Dutch paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel posted a 36% jump in core profit in the second quarter as higher prices and cost savings offset weak demand from the car industry and higher raw material prices. The results topped forecasts by analysts, helping spur a 3% rise in Akzo shares to 85.82 euros in morning trade. Revenues remained flat at 2.45 billion euros (£2.19 billion) as falling demand for coatings from the car industry and weakening economic growth drove sales volumes down 6%.

Dutch lawmakers step up tax demands on multinationals

Dutch lawmakers have launched an inquiry into how to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, after public criticism that government reforms do not go far enough. Scores of multinationals use the Netherlands to pare their tax bills but the Dutch, who bore tax hikes after the financial crisis, are growing increasingly hostile to minimising company tax, which is legal and has gone unchallenged for decades. Parliamentarians voted on Tuesday to establish an expert commission to examine how to make taxing multinationals "more fair" after Netherlands-based Shell recently acknowledged it had paid virtually no Dutch corporation tax in 2018.
