Copper market fundamentals point to lower refining charges -Antofagasta CEO

Tighter copper supply and an increase in refining capacity in top-consumer China should result in lower treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) by smelters, the chief executive of Chilean miner Antofagasta PLC (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) told Reuters on Monday. Last week, sources told Reuters that China's largest smelters had raised their minimum charges to turn concentrate into refined metal by up to 10 percent for the fourth quarter, more than most traders had expected. While Chile is the world's largest copper producer, followed by neighboring Peru, 48 percent of global copper smelting capacity is in Asia, mostly in China and Japan, according to the Thomson Reuters Eikon Metals Fundamentals Database.

Antofagasta H1 copper output up 7.1 pct, keeps guidance

Chilean copper producer Antofagasta (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) said on Wednesday production in the first half rose 7.1 percent and kept its full-year cost and output guidance after talks to avert strike action. Copper prices have rallied this month as the global market is increasingly seen close to balanced, compared with expectations of a surplus at the start of the year, after an Indonesian strike and contract negotiations at Chile (Stuttgart: 704599.SG - news) 's Escondida interrupted supply from the world's top two mines. New (KOSDAQ: 160550.KQ - news) labour laws in Chile, combined with still relatively low prices, have stoked fears of more widespread labour disputes, but Antofagasta averted strike action last week when it signed a wage deal with workers.

Antofagasta CEO Ivan Arriagada said the company had continued its focus on improving efficiencies and savings.

Zaldivar mine strike threat in Chile averted as deal is reached

Copper miner Antofagasta (LSE: ANTO.L - news) has signed a wage deal with workers at its Zaldivar deposit in Chile (Stuttgart: 704599.SG - news) , the company and the union said on Monday, averting threatened labor action. "The new collective contract recognizes the benefits that the workers had and also makes a decided move to focus on productivity," Zaldivar, a division of Antofagasta (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) , said in a statement, without giving further details of the deal. Zaldivar's union had voted this month to strike but delayed walking off to engage in government-mediated negotiations as mandated by Chilean law.

Zaldivar copper mine workers extend wage talks with company

Union-represented workers and management at Antofagasta (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) 's Zaldivar copper mine failed to reach a wage deal on Thursday and they agreed to extend government-mediated talks into next week, the union said. Antofagasta did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Zaldivar produced just over 100,000 tonnes of copper last year, out of the 5.5 million tonne total produced by Chile (Stuttgart: 704599.SG - news) , the world's top producer.

Antofagasta reaches wage agreement with Centinela mine supervisors

Chilean mining company Antofagasta (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) said on Friday it had reached a new wage agreement with supervisors at its Centinela copper mine, defusing the risk of a strike amid a volatile labor landscape in the South American country. The supervisors' union voted to strike in early July, but instead of downing tools immediately, entered a new round of government-mediated negotiations with the company as required by law. "The agreement, which was reached during the mediation phase, will be formalized today, July 14," Antofagasta said in a statement.

Workers at Chile's Zaldivar copper mine to resume labor talks

Workers at the Zaldivar copper mine in Chile (Stuttgart: 704599.SG - news) , owned by Antofagasta Plc (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) and Barrick Gold Corp, will resume talks with Antofagasta after voting to strike earlier this week, the union said on Thursday. Zaldivar's workers have the same legal adviser as the union at Chile's Escondida mine, the largest copper mine in the world, where workers went on strike for more than 40 days earlier this year. New (KOSDAQ: 160550.KQ - news) labor laws have emboldened workers as low copper prices have resulted in less generous contract offers.

UPDATE 1-Workers at Zaldivar copper mine in Chile approve strike

Workers at the Zaldivar copper mine in Chile (Stuttgart: 704599.SG - news) , owned by Antofagasta (Other OTC: ANFGF - news) and Barrick Gold (Hanover: ABR.HA - news) Corp, voted to approve a strike on Monday after talks with the company failed, a union leader told Reuters. "We still need the official vote for the city of Antofagasta," said union president Raul Torres, referring to a city where many of Chile's copper miners live. Antofagasta, which manages labor relations at Zaldivar, declined to comment on the union vote, but said it would continue to work within the guidelines established by law.
