To sum up two weeks of buy-side and sell-side research since the coronavirus started to seriously rattle global markets, let's just say that the SARS precedent doesn't actually tell us much about what to expect, and that we simply don't know how bad and deadly and hurtful to the world economy this epidemic could turn out to be.

Not only did the bloc miss expectations but both France and Italy shocked investors with their GDP actually contracting in Q4. One of the rare glimpses of light in 2019 was the Gallic relative economic performance but there's fear that the social unrest against the pension reform has undermined that.

    MORNING BID EUROPE-A global emergency

European shares are up 0.3%, although U.S. futures still imply a weaker open and Asian shares gave up their efforts to rise and closed 0.3% lower. Analysts reckon that when Chinese markets reopen next week and catch up with all the overseas falls, China's central bank will be on hand to supply liquidity in dollops and also prevent the yuan weakening beyond 7 to the dollar. Similar picture with South Korea’s upbeat industrial output figures; they date to December.

Spain's BBVA books $172 million quarterly loss, Spanish lenders' NII pressured

Spanish bank BBVA booked a loss of 155 million euros (£130 million) in the fourth quarter due to impairments in its U.S. business, while a modest increase in overall lending income belied the struggle with low interest rates for lenders across Spain. BBVA's diversification overseas, especially in Mexico, has helped the bank cope with tough conditions in Europe in the years since the financial crisis. A decline in interest rates and an economic slowdown in the United States, which accounts for nearly 10% of the bank's earnings, triggered a negative adjustment of $1.5 billion to the value of the unit's goodwill.
