The stamp duty freeze will continue until the end of June, the chancellor said, with the nil rate band set at £250,000 – double its standard level – until the end of September.

First time buyers or those with small amounts of savings looking to move were also given a boost. The chancellor announced a new government guarantee scheme that will allow people to secure mortgages on properties worth up to £600,000 with a deposit of just 5%.

The stamp duty holiday is a bonus for BWY. This week news emerged that mortgage approvals are highest since 2007. That gave me confidence to buy 100 shares.

Big fall today. This virus has caused mass job losses, among the young who are the typical buyers of new homes.

Housebuilders are in a difficult place. The extra deaths put new property on the market. The extra jobless can't pay mortgage or rent. I will watch Bellway in 2020 to see how this firm will cope with a severe downturn in trade. BWY has lots of cash. It will need it. CO19 may produce the biggest economic shock since Wall street 1929. Wait until the dust settles before rushing to buy BWY.L.

    Not a bad asset.

Poor results from Vistry have hit the housebuilders. There will be a time to buy. Watch BWY, it will recover, slowly.
