John Lewis warns staff face signifcant bonus cut despite sales rise

John Lewis and Waitrose workers face a cut in their annual bonus this year despite an upturn in Christmas sales - as the retailers face a turbulent period ahead. Both brands are part of the employee-owned John Lewis Partnership, which last year awarded a bonus pool of £145m to its 91,500 staff - or more than £1,500 each. The John Lewis Partnership said the sector was under pressure from a shift to online shopping and the fall in the pound.

Perfume, lingerie drive strong Christmas sales at Debenhams

Debenhams (Frankfurt: D2T.F - news) , Britain's No.2 department store chain, grew sales over its Christmas trading period, as customers bought more make-up, fragrances and lingerie, showing a strategy to shift away from fashion sales was working. British shoppers have defied predictions that Christmas spending would be down, and continued to treat themselves. Debenhams' peers Marks & Spencer (Frankfurt: 534418 - news) and John Lewis also reported growth, in contrast to clothing retailer Next (EUREX: NXTJ.EX - news) which has suffered as Britons cut back on clothes spending.
