Now the 59-year-old and his team are under pressure to show they can keep finding treasures others have missed – this time in waters off Mexico where former state oil monopoly Pemex has been exploring for decades.

Strong growth in fuel demand accelerates oil market rebalancing

Strong oil demand growth in emerging economies led by China and India, but also from Europe, is drawing down oil stockpiles faster than expected, putting the global market firmly on track to rebalance, senior industry executives said on Tuesday. A surge in demand for diesel and fuel stock draws after Hurricane Harvey have also helped propel benchmark crude prices to nearly $60 a barrel, levels not seen in over two years, analysts said. Prices rallied in the third quarter as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC producers cut output, and as Harvey knocked out nearly a quarter of U.S. refining capacity.

LNG growth to propel oil and gas industry's carbon emissions -WoodMac

Liquefied natural gas (Dusseldorf: LI5.DU - news) will be the biggest source of carbon emission growth for the world's top oil and gas companies by 2025, according to a new study by Wood Mackenzie, as demand for the super-chilled fuel is set to rise sharply. Oil and gas companies such as Exxon Mobil (Swiss: XOM-USD.SW - news) , Royal Dutch Shell and Total (LSE: 524773.L - news) have promoted natural gas as a cleaner fossil fuel that will displace coal to meet growing demand for energy as the world shifts away from fossil fuels in the coming decades.

Energy firms back EU plan for CO2 cap on power subsidies

A group of energy firms has backed a disputed plan by EU regulators to attach emissions limits to subsidies for providing back-up power capacity to avert blackouts. The proposal by the European Commission, which would set a cap of 550 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour for new power stations, ruling out less-efficient coal and gas-fired plants, has been fiercely contested by Poland and some other EU member states. It is part of a draft reform of Europe's electricity market that calls for stricter rules on capacity mechanisms used in countries such as Britain and France to fund power generation that may not be cost-effective or as clean as renewable energy but is needed to guarantee supply during periods of peak demand.

Kazakhstan has said it needs to adjust the terms of the deal as it expects to boost output later this year thanks to the giant Kashagan field.

Tropical depression brings flooding to U.S. Gulf Coast states

A tropical depression formerly known as Tropical Storm Cindy caused flooding on Thursday in several U.S. southeastern states, spawned a tornado that injured four people in Alabama, and cut 16 percent of Gulf of Mexico oil production. Cindy was a tropical storm when it made landfall near the Louisiana-Texas border about 3 a.m. CT (0800 GMT) Thursday, then weakened as it traveled north. By afternoon, it was over northern Louisiana, and its heavy rains had resulted in flooding and road closures in each state bordering the Gulf, from eastern Texas to northwestern Florida.
