Eaton Vance portfolio manager pleads guilty to $2M securities fraud

An Eaton Vance Corp. employee has agreed to a guilty plea for abusing his position as an options portfolio manager to enrich himself at the expense of the company and its clients, federal prosecutors said Monday. Kevin Amell, a 45-year-old Hingham resident and vice president at Eaton Vance (EV), struck a plea agreement on one count of securities fraud, prosecutors said. As recently as February, Amell would use the information he had about options markets as a portfolio manager to make trades that benefited his personal brokerage accounts, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Ex-Eaton Vance portfolio manager to plead guilty to fraud in U.S. court

A former Eaton Vance Corp portfolio manager has agreed to plead guilty to having engaged in a fraudulent scheme involving call options that enabled him to illegally make $1.9 million, according to papers filed in Boston federal court on Monday. Kevin Amell, 45, a onetime vice president at the Boston-based asset management firm, agreed to plead guilty to securities fraud and forfeit $1.95 million as part of a deal in which prosecutors would seek a prison sentence of no more than 27 months, the documents said. "The misconduct of this former employee in willfully violating his duty of loyalty, firm compliance policies and federal securities laws is deeply regrettable," Thomas Faust, Eaton Vance's chief executive officer, said in a statement.
