Scott Black: We like companies that generate a good return on equity and free cash, and we like to buy them at low absolute multiples. It is a powerhouse in semiconductor capital equipment, and its products are used primarily in front-end wafer processing, which is becoming a $50 billion business. Lam has a 56%-57% market share in wafer etch, and about a 40% share in vapor deposition.

Shares of chip equipment stocks are rising on the blow-out results and outlook yesterday afternoon from Micron Technology (MU), especially Lam Research (LRCX), the poster child for tools for memory chips, rising $2.89, or 1.6%, at $189. Shares of Applied Materials (AMAT) are up 31 cents, or 0.6%, at $53.27, and KLA-Tencor (KLAC), up 35 cents, at $111.97. In the words of Craig Ellis, who follows chips and chip equipment makers, the "takeaways support the case for Memory strength to continue well into C18 albeit with DRAM tighter than NAND." The factors at play are "steadily increasing end demand diversification and rising system content to meet the Tech industry’s various next gen initiatives." Ellis thinks this should allay concerns about a massive NAND correction next year: Additionally, this is the second data point showing tame C1H18 memory pricing following ARRS’12/14 comment memory pricing was looking surprisingly firm into 1H18.
Shares of chip equipment maker KLA-Tencor (KLAC) are up $5.86, or almost 6%, at $111.49, after Keybanc’s Weston Twigg this morning raised his rating on the shares to Overweight from Equal Weight, and sets a $134 price target, predicting the market will be less slanted toward NAND flash production, therefore bringing investors back who’ve been focused on Lam Research (LRCX) and Applied Materials (AMAT). On top of the swing of attention, KLA already has the best profit margins in the industry, observes Twigg: We project KLAC's gross margin to remain between 63-64% through F2019, which compares favorably to AMAT at 46-47%, LRCX at 47-48%, and ASML at 43-49% (highly variable due to its EUV ramp).
