Meta (META) kicked off its annual conference yesterday with multiple product and update announcements. Among them include new AI chatbots and AI-generated stickers for messaging services, which may be an effort to pull in more Gen Z users. Yahoo Finance Senior Tech Reporter Allie Garfinkle breaks down Meta's artificial intelligence developments and how tech consumers are reacting to them. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) stock had a good Thursday, with its more than 2% price gain topping the S&P 500 index's 0.6% rise. The conference, a two-day event that concluded on Thursday, saw Meta Platforms introduce several new pieces of hardware and some fresh artificial intelligence (AI) offerings. Meta Platforms also took the wraps off a set of Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Meta Platforms used public Facebook and Instagram posts to train its new Meta AI virtual assistant, but excluded private posts shared only with family and friends in an effort to respect consumers' privacy, the company's top policy executive told Reuters in an interview. Meta also did not use private chats on its messaging services as training data for the model and took steps to filter private details from public datasets used for training, said Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, speaking on the sidelines of the company's annual Connect conference this week. "We've tried to exclude datasets that have a heavy preponderance of personal information," Clegg said, adding that the "vast majority" of the data used by Meta for training was publicly available.
