MILAN, Oct (Shenzhen: 000069.SZ - news) 11 (Reuters) - Spanish shares rebounded sharply in a flat European market on Wednesday on hopes that a big political crisis in the euro zone's fourth largest economy could de-escalate after Catalonia stopped short of declaring formal independence from Madrid. While Spain's benchmark IBEX rose 1.3 percent, the pan-European STOXX 600 index ended flat and the euro zone blue chip index inched up 0.2 percent.

South African packaging and paper company Mondi (Frankfurt: KYC.F - news) said on Thursday underlying operating profit for the first quarter of 2017 was down 6 percent due to lower selling prices and inflationary cost pressures. Underlying operating profit fell to 252 million euros ($274 million) in the three months through March from 269 million euros a year ago, Mondi, which is also listed in London said in a statement. "Strong sales volume growth was more than offset by a significantly lower forestry fair value gain, inflationary cost pressures and lower average selling prices," the company said.
