Nokia sees weak first half but strong momentum later in 2018

HELSINKI/LONDON (Reuters) - Nokia posted a big drop in profits at its mainstay network equipment business as operators, particularly in North America held off spending, but it sees momentum building later in 2018 as the market for next-generation 5G networks takes off. Reports on Wednesday that the U.S. could level similar sanctions on Huawei over Iran could be a boon for Western network suppliers such as Nokia, analysts said.

The iPhone Is Coming to Nokia's Rescue

For a company that no longer makes mobile phones, it’s odd that Nokia Oyj is making almost all of its money from them. The world's biggest mobile phone maker before the iPhone came along in 2007, the Finnish company's main business is now communications networks – in theory. It licenses this know-how through its Nokia Technologies business.

Ericsson revival hopes lifted by cost cutting progress

Ericsson stirred recovery hopes on Friday by beating quarterly profit expectations, lifting the mobile equipment maker's battered shares as cost-savings started to kick in. Ericsson, which competes with Huawei, Nokia and ZTE, said it expected the Chinese market to decline further due to lower 4G investments, but momentum was positive in North America, its biggest market.
