Shareholders narrowly approve UK builder Persimmon's management pay plan

Of the votes cast, 51.5 percent were in favour of Persimmon's Advisory Remuneration Report and 48.5 percent against, the company said in a statement. Persimmon introduced a long-term incentive plan in 2012 that could have seen the firm's top management, including Chief Executive Jeff Fairburn, make a profit of more than 200 million pounds on share options. Following widespread criticism, that scheme was scaled back in February with changes made to the 2012 plan's entitlements for CEO Fairburn, finance chief Mike Killoran and managing director Dave Jenkinson.

Is Persimmon pay fury built on shaky foundations?

There was disgust when, at the end of last year, it emerged that the chief executive, chief financial officer and managing director of Persimmon (Frankfurt: 882058 - news) , the UK's largest housebuilder, were in line for multi-million pound pay-outs related to long-term incentive schemes. The company's chairman and the head of the remuneration committee resigned after admitting the scheme was badly designed and should have included a cap on bonuses - while Jeff Fairburn, the CEO, said he would give away part of his expected £100m pay-out to charity following an outcry from politicians. The issue is likely to flare up again when, the week after next, Persimmon holds its annual meeting.

Inflation relief helps boost FTSE 100, Fenner surges on Michelin takeover

Britain's FTSE 100 index gained on Tuesday, with banks leading the way after data showed a small slowdown in inflation, while Fenner shares surged after a takeover offer from tyre maker Michelin. In the second approach for a UK mid-cap firm in as many days, Fenner (FENR.L) jumped 24 percent to the top of the FTSE 250 after France's Michelin (MICP.PA) made a 1.2 billion-pound ($1.7 billion) bid for the engineering company. "Our first take is that the deal looks good and offers a healthy premium especially in light of Fenner's very strong recent share price performance," said Stifel analysts.

UK builder Persimmon names Roger Devlin as new chairman

Persimmon (Frankfurt: 882058 - news) , Britain's second-biggest builder, on Thursday named Roger Devlin as its new chairman, hoping he will help the company move on after a row over an executive incentive plan saw his predecessor quit last year. Devlin will step down as chairman of pub operator Marston's and as the senior independent director of the Football Association on May 1 and start as Persimmon chairman on June 1. In December Persimmon's then chairman Nicholas Wrigley and the chairman of the company's remuneration committee Jonathan Davie quit, recognising their mistake in not putting a cap on the incentive plan.
