SoftBank continues to make waves by underwriting the valuations of a growing number of turbocharged “unicorns” carrying private values north of $10 billion. In fact, on Friday the firm participated in what may be the most opportunistic acquisition of valuable startup stakes in recent memory. In a related party deal, SoftBank and a group of other investors plucked sizable stakes in nearly 50 startups out of a NYSE-listed Chinese internet company called Renren.
Renren Inc. has canceled a potential initial coin offering after Chinese regulators discouraged the Beijing-based social network from pursuing the plan, people familiar with the matter said.
