Hawaiian Electric Co. and New Jersey-based NRG Energy Inc. have struck a deal on a power purchase agreement for the Honolulu-based utility to buy power from the Kawailoa Solar farm on Oahu’s North Shore, the two companies said Monday. The deal still needs the approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission. The project is located on Kamehameha Schools-owned land near the existing 69-megawatt Kawailoa Wind farm that has provided as much as 10 percent of Oahu's electricity needs since 2012.
