Adding to the turmoil, was a contentious investor call during which CEO Oscar Munoz admitted that United had “dug ourselves in a hole” in regard to competition. Shares of United (UAL) sunk over 11% on Thursday after the airline announced it will continue to expand its flying capacity amid a rise in overall operating expenses.
Shares of the third-largest U.S. airline were trading at around $60.10 following United's quarterly earnings call, where executives faced pointed questions on the carrier's forecast performance in the current quarter. "We have dug ourselves in a hole from a competitive perspective," Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz said in response to a grilling on the call with media and investors. The Chicago-based airline said it expects passenger revenue per available seat mile, a closely-watched measurement of an airline's performance, to decline by 1 percent to 3 percent in the current quarter, while many investors and analysts had expected growth.
Currently, JetBlue Airways (JBLU) has a forward EV-to-EBITDA ratio of 5.8x. It has had an average valuation of 7.1x since 2008.
Oscar Munoz, CEO of United Continental, said the company went 28 days in the third quarter without bumping passengers.
Among the companies with shares expected to trade actively in Thursday's session are Apple, eBay, United Continental, American Express and Blue Apron.
