Unilever, owner of brands including Dove, Ben & Jerry’s, and Lipton, has announced ambitious new commitments to reduce its plastic waste and help create a circular economy for plastics. Halve its use of virgin plastic, by reducing its absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and accelerating its use of recycled plastic. This commitment makes Unilever the first major global consumer goods company to commit to an absolute plastics reduction across its portfolio.
The newly redeveloped Unilever North America headquarters building in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., has received LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the highest level of LEED certification available for sustainable buildings. The certification process assesses buildings across several categories including: location and transportation, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and more.
Unilever announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire OLLY Nutrition, a premium U.S.-based wellbeing business in the vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) category. Based in San Francisco, California (U.S.), OLLY Nutrition was co-founded in 2014 by Eric Ryan, who also previously co-founded home and personal care products company method®. Established as a B Corp, OLLY Nutrition’s mission is to make nutrition delightfully easy as it believes good health is the foundation of happiness.
Unilever is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar bulk and Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey pints, which may inadvertently contain tree nuts including almonds, Brazil nuts, and hazelnuts that are not declared in the ingredient list or allergy information list. Persons who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to these undeclared tree nuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled products. The affected Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar bulk product is sold in a tub containing 2.4 gallons with a Consumer UPC of 076840104246 and best by date of SEP1520BJ4.
At the Walmart Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting today, Unilever North America President Amanda Sourry announced plans to accelerate and expand the company’s plastics commitments in North America. The three-part plan provides better choices for plastic packaging, adds clear recycling instructions on pack, and launches a shopper education program in partnership with Walmart. “We know that the response from the consumer goods industry is critical in determining the speed that positive change takes place around plastic packaging, and using less, better, or no plastics is a priority at Unilever,” said Sourry.

Unilever is donating food supplies and personal care products valued at over $2 million to food banks through its partnership with Feeding America®. The nonprofit is accepting donations as government workers and contractors directly affected by the shutdown are turning to their local food banks to help put food on their tables.
Unilever today unveiled reusable packaging innovations across nine of its brands, including four new product formats. The platform also offers the opportunity to work with others at scale to test reuse models and shift consumer behavior, which will help make circular packaging systems commercially viable. Premium skincare brand REN Clean Skincare, Hellmann’s, Love Beauty and Planet, Love Home and Planet and Seventh Generation will trial new reusable packaging made from aluminum and glass.
Consumers in the U.S. can now view fragrance ingredients found in more than 1,100 Unilever beauty and personal care products across 15 brands down to 0.01% of the product formula. Unilever is leading the industry by listing product-specific fragrance ingredients down to this level of detail for its entire mass-market portfolio of beauty and personal care products. Unilever’s transparency initiative goes beyond U.S. regulations for beauty and personal care products, which require companies to only list “fragrance” generically on packages.
