A challenging macroeconomic environment and strengthening of the U.S. dollar are likely to hurt United Technologies' (UTX) third-quarter earnings.
United Technologies (UTX) posted 2% net sales growth in 2016 after a 3% decline in 2015, as costs remained relatively uniform.
Airbus (AIR.PA) planemaking chief Fabrice Bregier said the company still expects to deliver "around 200" A320neo aircraft in 2017, but added that reaching this existing target would be "tough" in the wake of delayed engine deliveries. Bregier said Pratt & Whitney (UTX.N), whose industrial problems have delayed deliveries of jets at Airbus plants, was testing re-designed parts for its engines and expected to start delivering the improved versions at the end of this year. Airbus has decided to improve the plane's maximum take-off weight by around 4 percent to 251 tonnes so that the A330neo can serve longer routes like Kuala Lumpur to London, he added.

PARIS, Oct (Shenzhen: 000069.SZ - news) 10 (Reuters) - French investigators are preparing for an intricate operation to repatriate an Air France Airbus A380 passenger jet that was forced to make an emergency landing in Canada after one of its engines came apart in mid-flight, people familiar with the manoeuvre said. The Airbus superjumbo diverted to Goose Bay in Labrador on Sept. 30 after one of its four engines exploded over Greenland, sending the front part of the engine including its 3-metre-wide fan into the ice sheet 37,000 feet below. Making the roughly 2,300 nautical mile (4,260 km) trip will need a switch in engines to help the mammoth jet fly smoothly.

Thyssenkrupp (TKAG.DE), trying to transform itself into a technology group, is attracting strong demand for its next-generation elevators, which operate without steel cables or ropes, it said on Friday. The German group is banking on MULTI as well as internet-connected elevators as it strives to become a technology conglomerate and shift away from its core steelmaking business, which it plans to merge with Tata Steel (TISC.NS). "Demand is gigantic," Andreas Schierenbeck, chief executive of Thyssenkrupp Elevator, the group's most profitable business unit, told Reuters.

Airbus told European governments on Wednesday that it has made a strategic decision to bring the design of some nacelles or aircraft engine casings inside the company, rather than leaving it with suppliers, according to a presentation on its website. An Airbus spokesman said the decision had already been taken to recoup nacelle work carried out by United Technologies for engines supplied by the same company to power the A320neo jet. United Technologies engine subsidiary Pratt & Whitney was not immediately available for comment.

PARIS, Oct (Shenzhen: 000069.SZ - news) 3 (Reuters) - France's air accident investigation agency said on Tuesday it would lead the probe into an engine explosion that prompted the emergency landing of an Air France (Paris: FR0000031122 - news) A380 superjumbo in Canada with over 500 people on board on Saturday (Shenzhen: 002291.SZ - news) . Reuters reported on Monday that Canada, France and the United States were debating who should lead the investigation into the accident, which took place high over Greenland. The decision to hand control to the BEA means investigators can begin planning an unusual search in potentially inhospitable terrain to find a missing 3-metre-(9.8-foot)-wide fan that ripped off the engine in midair.
First, Rockwell Collins (COL) bought B/E Aerospace, and now it is being acquired by United Technologies (UTX). Vertical Research Partners' Rob Stallard has a few thoughts on that. Stallard writes that there are plenty of reasons driving the increase in M&A in the sector, but he focuses on structural changes in the OEM/supplier relationship, and in the aftermarket. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have the ability to pressure suppliers on price, a trend that Stallard writes has gotten worse in the last few years.
