Altria August dividend trade alive despite U.S. nicotine proposal

A U.S. proposal to slash nicotine levels in cigarettes may have smoked some investors out of Altria Group Inc (NYSE: MO - news) , whose Marlboro line is the top-selling U.S. brand, but long-term stockholders are staying put after decades of dividend hikes in August. Altria, informally known as "Big Mo" before its split from Phillip Morris International Inc in 2008, fell as much as 12 percent after the Federal Drug Administration on July 28 proposed cutting nicotine in cigarettes to "non-addictive" levels to encourage a shift to potentially less harmful e-cigarettes. Its shares are up 1.6 percent since the start of August, compared with a 0.4 percent gain in the benchmark S&P 500 index.

US STOCKS-Wall Street swings lower after Trump warns North Korea

U.S. stocks closed lower on Tuesday after a late afternoon selling spree as investors fled for safety after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to respond aggressively to any threats from North Korea. After scaling back from record highs earlier in the session, Wall Street's three major indexes dipped after Trump said North Korea "will be met with fire and fury" like the world has never seen if it threatens the United States. "Trump's response was aggressive and that's why the market turned lower," said Ken Polcari, Director of the NYSE floor division at O’Neil Securities.
