China Southern in Talks With British Airways on Joint Venture

China Southern Airlines Co., one of the nation’s top three state carriers, is exploring a joint venture with British Airways for flights between the Asian country and the U.K., according to the company’s global sales director. Asia’s biggest carrier by fleet size is discussing with IAG SA’s BA on how to extend cooperation beyond the existing basic code-share agreement announced in December, Senior Vice-President Luo Laijin said in an interview Friday at London’s Heathrow Airport. The two are discussing special pro-rate agreements, flight connections from the U.K.’s capital to cities including Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as to some African cities.

Chinese Airlines Become Collateral Damage in U.S. Trade Spat

Chinese airlines ordered more than $100 billion of planes from Airbus SE and Boeing Co. in the past decade. Paying those bills is getting harder with the prospect of a trade war pushing the local currency to its lowest level in six months. A weaker yuan means Air China Ltd., China Southern Airlines Co. and China Eastern Airlines Corp. will find it more costly to pay for new aircraft, which are priced in dollars.

China to ease "one route, one airline" policy for Chinese carriers

China will ease its near decade-old "one route, one airline" policy for Chinese airlines, the country's aviation regulator said on Monday, allowing for increased competition on long-haul international routes. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), in a statement on its website, said it has revised rules in response to a changing aviation market as well as the 2019 opening of a second international airport in Beijing, which in turn is aimed at creating the world's largest aviation hub in the city. The CAAC introduced the policy in 2009 for long-haul international routes to prevent mainly China's state-backed airlines from competing too aggressively on routes deemed difficult to profit from.

Chinese airlines tipped for record profits on tourism boom, yuan gains

China's three largest airlines are likely to report their strongest annual profits in years this week, as soaring travel demand and foreign exchange gains more than make up for a drop in income-per-passenger and the rising cost of fuel. Analysts estimate China Southern Airlines Co Ltd , the country's largest carrier by passenger numbers, will report net income on Monday of about 6.4 billion yuan ($1.01 billion), its highest in 11 years as a listed firm, showed data from Thomson Reuters.

China Eastern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines said on Tuesday they had cancelled 176 round-trip flights to Taiwan that had been added to their schedules to meet demand over the Lunar New Year, amid a row between Beijing and Taiwan over flight routes. The airlines said in separate statements they had no choice but to cancel the trips after what they said was a refusal by Taiwanese authorities to approve the flights. This month China opened several new air routes, including a northbound route up the Taiwan Strait that divides China from the island.
