Aerial and Thermal Footage Shows Rivers of Lava Flowing Across La Palma

Thirty days on, the eruption activity at La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano shows no signs of slowing, with video from the morning of October 19 documenting rivers of lava flowing across the island.

By Sunday, October 17, at least 1,956 structures had been destroyed by lava flows covering 811.8 hectares (3.1 square miles), according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program.

Aerial and thermal footage, released by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME), shows the lava flow from the air on the morning of October 19. Credit: Instituto Geológico y Minero de España via Storyful
