Apple prepares to release over 20 products and updates this year

Yahoo Finance tech editor Dan Howley joins the Live show to break down the over 20 devices and updates Apple is preparing to release, including the latest iPhone, iPad, MacBooks, M1 chips, and the potential for VR headsets.

Video transcript

SEANA SMITH: All right, new products that may be on the way from Apple. And it could be one of the most ambitious product launches in the tech giant's history. Yahoo Finance tech editor Dan Howley is here. Dan, there's lots of products that we could be seeing. An iPhone, a new iPhone is reportedly in the mix.

DAN HOWLEY: That's right. We're expected to see this kind of usual flow of products that we get out of Apple every fall. But there should be some additional ones coming in 2023. Now, this is according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who, as I said before, I guess, lives inside of the walls of Tim Cook's home, just to get this kind of stuff. But we're looking at, obviously, the iPhone 14. Those will roll out. There'll be four of them as usual. That's something that you can expect.

Well, there's also reports that we'll get a new Apple Watch. That's usually something we get, the regular cadence. Every year, they roll out a new iPhone and a new Apple Watch. They'll have upgrades to things like the camera, the displays. There's been talk about a rugged version of the Apple Watch coming, as well as different technologies that may be added to it for health tracking. So those are some of the most, I think, anticipated items from consumers, just because it's the iPhone and the Apple Watch. And at least, I get stoked about those.

But then we're also expected to see, perhaps, Apple's next, next generation chip, the M3. They just announced the M2 this year at their WWDC event, their Worldwide Developers Conference. The M2 is, of course, a successor to their M1. This is all their original in-house silicon. They announced the M2 will launch with the new MacBook Air. It's fully redesigned, as well as the MacBook Pro 13-inch.

So those are going to have the M2 chip, but there could be more computers coming later this year, if not during the iPhone event. It's unlikely they would do something during September, which is the iPhone event. When it comes to these new chips, it would probably be a secondary event in October or November. But you can expect there to be perhaps this M3 chip, which you would think would provide a significant power boost over the M2 and M1. The fact that Apple has now, or will have at that point, three chips of its own really says a lot to how much they've put into as far as investing goes.

And as far as-- it to Intel, which they've abandoned in favor of their own silicon, and saying, look, not only have we done this successfully with consumers buying our goods, but we're already advancing each year with new generations of these chips. And we're building out the power of them. So it'll be really interesting.

And then, of course, the other topic is their headset, which we could end up seeing in 2023, perhaps maybe the end of this year, 2022. And that could also come with an M2 chip built inside to provide power and battery life. And look, if they can do that with a headset, I think it would just prove how good Apple is at doing all of this, even more so than they have done so already.

DAVE BRIGGS: But this is Apple. This is the greatest innovator of our time. There are five Apple devices on this desk ahead of me. This sounds all relatively incremental. And Apple fans are used to a big announcement. What do you think is the biggest evolution that's coming in the next year? Or is it something you already mentioned? Could it be that mixed reality headset?

DAN HOWLEY: It could be the headset. Every year, we kind of-- the advancement of things like smartwatches or smartphones has been incremental. We don't see those huge, huge advancements. There's some companies that are working on their foldable displays. Samsung has a number on the market. There's other companies that are doing that as well. Apple's not in that space yet. And there's debate on whether or not they ever will. So perhaps the smartphone sees those incremental updates.

But, you know, that mixed reality headset could be that next big product. And that's what a lot of people are talking about it becoming. And obviously, Meta's invested billions of dollars in that field. Microsoft as well. Google talks about its own mixed reality capabilities. Different gaming companies are in there, Nvidia as well. But, you know, I think Apple really could be the company that takes off as far as consumers go, because they are Apple.

And they are known for putting out products that people, frankly, want. Whether or not we'll be on the subways, and you see people with their headsets on, the same way you see them with their AirPods in, I think that remains to be seen. But we could start to see something percolating from them as soon as perhaps the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

DAVE BRIGGS: Please, hard pass on the headsets on the subway. Stock down 22% year to date. They could use a big announcement. Thank you, Dan Howley.
