Army National Guard Helicopters Help Fight Alaska's McKinley Fire

Two Alaska Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopters were helping to fight the McKinley Fire burning near Willow, Alaska, on August 19, dropping more than 100,000 gallons of water on the blaze, according to a National Guard spokesperson.

The helicopters flew for a total of 9.5 hours during the mission to slow the progression of the fire, which burned more than 3,700 acres by Thursday, August 22, the National Guard said.

An updated report for the morning of August 22 said light winds and “favorable weather” were making it easier for firefighters to battle the blaze. Credit: US Army National Guard via Storyful
