Banksy Confirms Reading Prison Mural as His Latest Work

Elusive street artist Banksy confirmed on March 4 that he is behind the new mural that was discovered on the outside wall of the historic prison in Reading, England, on Monday.

In an Instagram post captioned “Create Escape,” Banksy can be seen painting the mural late at night, with further videos showing police surveying the finished artwork in daylight.

The new artwork depicts a prisoner escaping from the disused gaol using a rope of bedsheets tied to a typewriter.

Video shared by Reading Council shows the mural on the day it was found on the wall of the prison, Monday, March 1.

The prison has been derelict since 2013 and was put up for sale in 2019, according to the BBC.

It famously housed Oscar Wilde between 1895 and 1897 and was immortalized by his poem Ballad of Reading Gaol during his stay. Credit: Reading Council via Storyful
