Chicago Teachers Protest Budget Cuts

A group of protesters were arrested inside the downtown Chicago Bank of America headquarters on Thursday, February 4, after the Chicago Teachers Union closed its account at the bank.

Several people sat inside the Bank of America lobby before being led out by Chicago police. A CTU video shows people being led out by police. Teachers and their supporters also held a rally in the area, shutting down the streets.

Chicago school officials announced earlier this week it planned to cut $100 million from its budgets and stop paying the teacher pension. The action came after the union rejected a proposed new contract with the district.

The union called the proposed cuts an act of war, according to news reports, and said the closing of its account of Bank of America was a symbolic gesture. Union officials said the district has money to pay for bad investments at the bank but not enough to pay for the teacher pension fund. Credit: Facebook/Chicago Teachers Union
