COP26 chief: World must act to avoid climate catastrophe

Sharma, Britain's former business minister and a member of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Cabinet, said immediate action must be taken to avoid "more frequent and more brutal" effects of pollution.

Britain hosts the COP26 climate conference in Scotland's largest city in November and will welcome back the United States under President Joe Biden.

His predecessor, Donald Trump, previously withdrew the U.S. from December 2015's Paris agreement on climate change, which was adopted at the conclusion of the COP 21 summit in the French capital.
