Currowan Bushfire Chokes Major Road on New South Wales South Coast

An out-of-control bushfire was threatening properties on the south coast of New South Wales on December 4, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said.

The Princes Highway between Burrill Lake and Batemans Bay was closed due to the Currowan bushfire while residents in Kioloa, Pretty Beach, Pebbly Beach, Depot Beach and Durras North were told to take shelter from the fire as it was “too late to leave”.

Firefighters worked to protect properties in affected areas and a number of evacuation centres were set up in neighbouring communities.

This footage, shared by a local fire brigade, shows the blaze along the Princes Highway between Burrill Lake and Batemans Bay, on December 3.

“Many people have asked why the highway is closed, as you can see in the video on this post, it can be extremely dangerous due to fire, fallen trees and smoke hazards,” a caption alongside the video read. Credit: Fire and Rescue NSW Station 384 Moruya via Storyful
