Currowan Bushfire Reaches the Coast Near Depot Beach
An uncontained blaze burning on the New South Wales coast threatened coastal communities on December 3.
Depot Beach, seen in this video, is one of several coastal communities threatened by the Currowan fire which had moved east from where it started in Bimberamala National Park.
“There were reports getting around that the town had burnt down. I jumped in the boat to go and look and report back to the other residents that it was ok still,” Depot Beach local Rudi Vann said.
The Currowan fire had burned more than 47,000 hectares by Wednesday December 4.
Residents in the area between Durras North and Kioloa were warned that it was too late to leave and to seek shelter from the fire.
Firefighters were battling more than 100 bush and grass fires across the state, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service, with 45 not yet contained including the Currowan fire. Credit: @rude_dude_81 via Storyful
