Drone Footage and Thermal Imaging Shows La Palma Volcano's Intense Lava Flow

A new vent on La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano began to release gas southeast of the main vent on Friday, October 15, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute.

Footage taken on Thursday by Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute shows an aerial view of the lava flow paired with thermal imaging.

Around 7,000 people had evacuated the island as of Friday, El Pais reported.

According to Ruben Fernandez, technical director of Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan, scientists detected a reduction in explosiveness and an increase in the emission of lava, creating more unpredictable conditions for evaluation, El Pais wrote. Credit: IGME via Storyful
