Elon Musk tweets: It’s 'time to break up Amazon'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter on Thursday calling for the break up of Amazon. Yahoo Finance’s Kristin Myers and Emily McCormick discuss.

Video transcript

KRISTIN MYERS: And I want to chat now about Elon Musk. He's been taking a victory lap over the last couple of days after that successful SpaceX launch. But today, he's decided to take to Twitter to throw some punches at another company. We have Yahoo Finance's Emily McCormick with more on that.

EMILY MCCORMICK: Hi, Kristin. So we do have Elon Musk tweeting, quote, "It's time to break up Amazon." And this was an apparent response to a screenshot that former "New York Times" reporter and author Alex Berenson said, indicating that his book "Unreported Truths about COVID-19 and Lockdowns" did not comply with Amazon's guidelines and, therefore, was not accepted to be offered for sale. Now, Berenson said in his series of original Twitter posts, quote, "Today, Amazon refused to publish my booklet about the coronavirus because it did not comply with their undisclosed guidelines.

This is outrageous censorship from a company that has gained hugely from lockdowns and dominates the US book market, especially with stores closed." So Elon Musk then weighed in with his own series of tweets in response, saying first, "This is insane, Jeff Bezos," and also, "Time to break up Amazon. Monopolies are wrong!" Now, Berenson did publish a portion of the text on his personal website. It's not immediately clear what those guidelines were that were not in compliance when it came to that booklet. I did reach out to an Amazon spokesperson for comment, but they were not immediately available to give a statement to this. And this is a developing story here. Kristin?

KRISTIN MYERS: Well, you got to love when Elon Musk takes pot shots.
