Endangered black caiman under threat in Bolivia

On Sunday (June 13), a black caiman was hunted down in the Bolivian town of Magdalena, in the Beni Department.

According to Bolivia's Deputy Minister for Environment and Water Magin Herrera Lopez, the leather and meat of the caiman are sought after items in some communities.

In Bolivia, the black caiman is considered as a vulnerable species and hunting is illegal, punishable by up to five years in prison.

The black caiman, whose scientific name is Melanosuchus niger, can measure up to 6 meters (19.68 ft) long.
