Fast-Moving Bushfires Threaten Properties in Western Australia

Fire officials issued emergency warnings as bushfires burned in parts of Western Australia on December 9.

Footage by Martin Pavey, a resident of Margaret River, shows thick smoke.

The fire service had issued two emergency warnings in the southwest of the state – one which included parts of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park in the shire of Augusta-Margaret River, and another for residents near Quininup Road in Busselton.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm said the fire affecting Augusta-Margaret River was uncontrolled and “moving fast in multiple directions.” It had burned more than 3,200 acres as of Thursday evening.

“The situation in this area is extremely serious,” he said. “A number of properties are under threat.” Credit: Martin Pavey via Storyful
