Fire Breaks Out at Oil Refinery in Durban

Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at the Engen crude oil refinery in Durban, South Africa, on December 4.

Local Mike Swart shot this drone footage of black smoke rising from the fire.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government said it dispatched emergency teams to the site, including disaster teams, environmental management specialists and teams responsible for air quality.

At the time of writing, officials said a cause of the fire had not yet been established.

According to Engen’s website, the plant in Durban has the capacity to refine 120,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Credit: Mike Swart via Storyful
