GM drops Apple CarPlay service, partners with Google on future EV assistance

Yahoo Finance Live discusses General Motors’ plan to partner with Google for EV assistance after dropping its partnership with Apple CarPlay.

Video transcript

SEANA SMITH: Let's start off with my pick today. And that's GM and Apple. GM reportedly planning to phase out Apple CarPlay and teaming up with Google instead starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer. The automaker is going to use its own infotainment system that is developing with Google for future EVs.

Why are they doing it? Well, they-- the thought here is that they are going to have access to more data. More data in terms of where you're driving. And also, some of that charging data for the EVs.

Now this is a big reversal for GM, who went all in on Apple CarPlay just a few years ago. Right now, Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, really lets drivers bypass their car's infotainment system. Potential backlash here. What's going to be discussed is that maybe it could alienate some iPhone users because people who have used CarPlay absolutely love it.

ALLIE GARFINKLE: So I've got to tell you, Seana. What I'm hearing here is, on one hand, Apple's ecosystem. That ecosystem is expanding. I feel the tentacles of it reaching out far and wide, right. And that's what the street wants.

That's what Apple wants. It's why people, for instance, think they're going to be successful in VR. However, as an Apple user, as an iPhone user, I'm like, what am I going to do with CarPlay? Right? What do I-- you're having a thought drop.

- I'm just-- what do I shop around more for? My phone or a car? And I just buy an iPhone every time I'm going to get a new phone, right, versus cars. I don't know about you guys. You should go and drive a couple of models from a couple of different brands and try them out.

CarPlay, to me, and Apple CarPlay, to match up with my phone, is an added bonus when I'm driving around those cars. I'm wondering if GM is putting itself in a corner here that maybe it didn't intend to. And if some Apple users are going to say, you know, I can get CarPlay with a Ford, or whatever the other brands are that would offer that. And if it actually hurts GM in a way.

ALLIE GARFINKLE: Yeah. And I don't know what really is going to be special about Apple CarPlay, really. I think we'll have to see.
