Greek PM Urged to Smile as He Signs Declaration of Commitment to the EU

EU leaders gathered on Saturday, March 25, to mark the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which created the institutions that led to the formation of the European Union.

Leaders from each member state excluding the UK, which has voted to leave the union, signed a new “Rome declaration” at the summit.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whose country has had a strained relationship with the EU since the union imposed strict austerity measures in Greece as part of an economic rescue package, was prompted by members of the crowd to smile as he signed the declaration.
