Hundreds Protest Richard Spencer's Speech at University of Florida

Hundreds of protesters marched outside as white nationalist Richard Spencer spoke at the University of Florida on Thursday, October 19. There was a large police presence, including state troopers, in case of any problems, but none had been reported.

The speech was not a university event in that neither university officials or any associated organizations invited Spencer to speak on campus. University officials have been under fire from students for allowing Spencer to speak on campus, but officials said they were required to approve the event because the university is a public institution.

University officials initially rejected Spencer’s application to speak on campus for September, citing a security risk because it was too soon after the events in Charlottesville. Credit: Instagram/Gabriela Jimenez via Storyful
