Icahn sheds Occidental Petroleum stake, Qualcomm falls on reports of Samsung cyberattack

Yahoo Finance Live's Brad Smith examines the opposing positions billionaire investors Warren Buffett and Carl Icahn take on Occidental Petroleum stakes, Bill Ackman's stake in the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and Qualcomm's shares fall after a cyberattack on Samsung.

BRAD SMITH: Welcome back, everyone here. Here are a few other movers that we're watching for you today. First up, we've got Occidental Petroleum. Stock at the center of trades from two billionaire investors, Warren Buffett and Carl Icahn. And they're on the opposite sides of the trade.

Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway revealing late Friday. It built up a $5 billion stake in Occidental. While Icahn sold off the last of his stake in the major oil producer after nearly three years. And these two have an indirect history when it comes to this company. Buffett financed Occidental's bid to take over Anadarko Petroleum in 2019, which Icahn criticized after taking his initial position. Occidental shares have nearly doubled in value so far this year.

And Carl and Warren aren't alone in revealing some new investments. Bill Ackman is making a return to activist investing with a position in Canada Pacific. The railroad giant is waiting on approval for its $27 billion merger with Kansas City southern. Based on the current share price, a stake is valued at more than $1 billion.

And he's got a history with the company. Back in 2012, he launched a successful proxy fight to replace the CEO and shake up the board. But in a statement to the Wall Street Journal Ackman says, this is a friendly investment and regretted getting out of the position in 2016.

And we've also got to take a look at Qualcomm shares here intraday as we're keeping an eye on shares of that company. Of course, ticker symbol, QCOM. You're seeing them lower by about 7 and 1/4% intraday. The stock taking a hit on news of a security breach at Samsung, which reportedly may have included Qualcomm data. The hacker group behind the recent Nvidia attack claimed responsibility for this one. And they say, they took source code for galaxy devices and internal documents. Samsung says no personal data of customers or employees were compromised. We'll keep you updated on that story.
