Killer Whales Hunt and Kill Blue Whale on West Australian Coast

A pod of killer whales hunted, killed and ate a blue whale off the coast of Bremer Bay, in Western Australia, on April 6.

In this footage, captured by local marine filmmaker Dave Riggs, the killer whales are seen closing in on their prey before blood gushes from the blue whale.

“From start to finish we witnessed a long search, quick kill and then long feeding,” said marine biologist Pia Markovic in a blog post documenting the incident.

“This is our second blue whale predation that we have ever witnessed,” Markovic said, adding that just two blue whale predations had ever been recorded in Australian history.

“Both have been here in the canyon, and both just a fortnight apart,” she said. Credit: Dave Riggs via Storyful
