La Palma Volcano Generates Shock Waves Over 5 Weeks Since First Eruption

The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, which began erupting on September 19, was still spewing lava over five weeks since its first eruption.

This footage, taken by Volcanoes Canary Islands, shows lava spewing from the volcano on the evening of October 27. The volcano’s main crater was launching fragments and periodically generating shock waves, Volcanoes Canary Islands said.

As of Wednesday, lava flows had destroyed 2,183 buildings on the island, the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said. Credit: Volcanoes Canary Islands via Storyful
