La Palma's Cumbre Vieja Volcano Spews Ash as Lava Flow Advances

New evacuation orders were announced for the Spanish island of La Palma, as the Cumbre Vieja volcano destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and continued to spew lava more than one month after its first eruption.

The local emergency service, 1-1-2 Canarias, said the advancement of the lava flow led to the evacuations of up to 50 homes on Wednesday, October 20.

A total of 2,185 buildings were destroyed by the volcanic activity by October 19, according to the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

More buildings have been destroyed since that data was recorded, as the lava reached the town of La Laguna and destroyed several homes and businesses by October 21.
