Lava Erupts From Volcanic Vent in Spain's Canary Islands

Lava continued to spew from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma on Friday, October 22; the molten rock had flowed across more than 886 hectares (about 3.3 square miles), according to Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

The lava had destroyed more than 2,120 buildings by October 21, according to authorities. Up to 50 homes near the town of La Laguna were evacuated on October 20 as the lava flow advanced through the neighborhood, according to the local emergency service 1-1-2 Canarias. Homes and businesses in the area were swallowed by lava.

Video shows fiery lava erupting from one of several chimneys on the volcano late Friday night. The recorder said wind was blowing ash and smoke “over evacuated territory and into the ocean.” Credit: Idafe.com via Storyful
