Military Seen in Tunis Overnight Amid Political Tumult

Members of Tunisia’s military were seen in central areas of the capital, Tunis, on the evening of July 25, hours after President Kais Saied said he was removing the country’s prime minister, Hichem Mechichi, and suspended parliament.

The move came against a backdrop of protests over the economy and COVID-19, which caused tensions inside Tunisia’s government. The president’s sudden move on Sunday was assailed by leaders of Ennahda, a major political party in the country, who described it as a “heinous coup.”

On Monday, protesters were seen in the vicinity of the country’s parliament.
