Mutt's Sauce adjusts to online sales amid the pandemic

Mutt's Sauce founder Charlynda Scale joined Yahoo Finance to discuss running guiding her small business thorugh the pandemic.

Video transcript

ADAM SHAPIRO: Just under 40 minutes to the closing bell. And when you fire up the grills this spring and this summer, make sure you have some Mutt's Sauce for the barbecue. We met Charlynda Scales before the pandemic. She is the founder of this company, a small business. And the story of what you've been through in the last year and a half. You gave birth to a child, and the company you gave birth to, you successfully steered it through the pandemic. We want to hear about how you did that. Tell us what has been most challenging for Mutt's Sauce, because we loved meeting you 16, 17 months ago.

CHARLYNDA SCALES: Well, thank you for having me back, Adam. I really appreciate it. It has been a roller coaster, to say the least. And I think that it's a master class in survival through the pandemic. I did have a baby, and we did have to basically start all over again with the company right when I had just given birth to my son.

SEANA SMITH: [INAUDIBLE]. I'm a mother of a son who's-- he's going to be two in July. So I think just having a child is enough on your plate, let alone trying to figure out how to navigate a pandemic and take hold of your smaller business. So here we are a year into the pandemic. Talk to us just about now when you look out over the next, say, three to five years. And I know that's a long look ahead at this point, it might seem like, but what are your plans to scale your business and now to take your business to the next level?

CHARLYNDA SCALES: Well I had to listen to my mentors, who were telling me to embrace e-commerce. We stopped having events because of the pandemic, and we focused on making a better e-commerce experience for our customers. And to make a better experience for our customers, we just focused on scaling online. And we're going on QVC in about four weeks. So that was [INAUDIBLE].

ADAM SHAPIRO: Well QVC is great for people who still have cable connections. But wait, when we talked to you the first time, I think you were making the plans for Amazon distribution and expanding more than supermarket. You put Amazon on hold. So if I wanted to get some now, where should I go?

CHARLYNDA SCALES: You go straight to muttssauce.com. Muttssauce.com has the entire line of sauces, and we also have spices now.

ADAM SHAPIRO: All right. Listen, we're looking forward to having you back, especially during barbecue season. Charlynda Scales, Mutt's Sauce founder. All the best to you. And remember, muttssauce.com. Air Force veteran like her grandfather, who was the creator of that sauce.
