'Powerful Explosions' Registered at La Palma Volcano

“Powerful explosions” were registered at the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma on September 23, according to official reports.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute said in a post to Twitter that the explosions had been ongoing since 5:20 pm on Thursday.

Scientists with the European Space Agency’s Copernicus program forecast that toxic sulfur dioxide gas emitted by the volcano will reach the Iberian Peninsula later this week.
