PPI data, Fedspeak, CarMax earnings: What to watch

As the trading day draws to a close, Yahoo Finance anchors Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton preview the key events to watch for Thursday, April 11th, 2024.

On the economic data front, the spotlight will be on the release of the Producer Price Index (PPI) report. This data will provide further insights into the strength of the economy and offer clues as to how the Federal Reserve may proceed with potential rate cuts.

Multiple Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to deliver commentary, including remarks from Fed Governor Michelle Bowman and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic. Their views on the appropriate path for interest rates following March's hot CPI print will be highly anticipated.

The earnings calendar features reports from companies such as Constellation Brands (STZ) and CarMax (KMX).

JOSH LIPTON: Time now for to watch. Thursday, April 11th, we're starting off with the economy. We're going to be getting the latest PPI data in the morning.

Economists forecasting inflation to slow from February month-over-month. Prices expected to rise 2/10 of a percent. This will be a key reading after that hotter than expected CPI report today. Wall Street looking to the Fed's reaction as the central bank weighs a move to cut rates this year.

JULIE HYMAN: Moving on to the Federal Reserve, we're getting another round of Fed commentary following the PPI report tomorrow, including Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic. This comes after Bostic's appearance on Yahoo Finance Tuesday in which he reiterated he still expects one cut in 2024. But he also didn't rule out either zero or two cuts.

JOSH LIPTON: And finally, taking a look at earnings. Constellation Brands and CarMax both reporting tomorrow. Constellation announcing fourth quarter results in the morning. One analyst saying the company's earnings could be highlighted again by the durability of its beer business.
