Quayside in Southern French Town Swallowed by Storm Gloria Floodwater

The local government in the southern French department of the Aude had a red flood warning in place on January 23, after heavy rain from Storm Gloria inundated the region.

Christine Barrely, who works as a parliamentary attaché with a local representative, recorded videos of the flooding in Limoux on January 22 and 23. She said on the second day that waters had receded significantly, but that the outlook was not certain. She said a potential snowmelt from nearby mountains could raise levels again.

La Depeche said 2,000 people had to be evacuated during the flooding, across the Pyrenees-Orientales and the Aude. Four people were known to be missing, the paper said. Credit: Christine Barrely via Storyful
