Queensland Man Uses Hailstones to Cool His Beer After Freak Storm

After hail ‘the size of cricket balls’ fell in parts of southeast Queensland on November 17, one man put the leftover ice to good use – to chill his beers.

Grant Hadland, who lives in Caloundra West on the Sunshine Coast, was filmed in the act at his family home by wife Magdalena.

“There was lots of damage to our neighbour’s homes. Broken windows, smashed cars, windows and dents. Lots of trees have fallen over,” she told Storyful.

The video shows Hadland standing in his yard in nothing but his boardshorts opening and then enjoying one of the ice-cold brews. The couple’s toddler, Ryder, was separately filmed reacting to seeing hail for the first time.

The Bureau of Meteorology had earlier issued a warning covering parts of Redland City, the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane city and Moreton Bay for “destructive winds” and “giant hailstones”.

The hail came as several large bushfires continued to burn in the surrounding area. An emergency warning was issued for one out-of-control bushfire north of Toowoomba at Pechey on November 17. Credit: Magdalena Hadland via Storyful
