Residents Advised to Shelter-in-Place as Flooding Impacts Sumas, Washington

Residents of Sumas, Washington, were advised to shelter-in-place on Monday, November 29, as the Nooksack River spilled its banks and overflowed into parts of the city.

Officials with the City of Sumas, which is in Whatcom County, said water had bypassed the Cherry Street bridge on Monday morning and was expected to continue to spread, though they remained “encouraged” due to the flow’s slow-down.

As of Monday morning, most roads in and out of Sumas were closed, the city said. This video shared by the city shows flooding near the Cherry Street bridge. Credit: City of Sumas via Storyful
