Security Loosens in Washington Following Inauguration Day

Fences were dismantled in Washington on Thursday, January 21, following Joe Biden’s inauguration the previous day.

Heavy security measures, including the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and stretches of protective fencing, were put in place for Inauguration Day following the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Thursday that crews had begun removing fencing and barriers on major streets, a process that could take up to 36 hours. Local media reported that an enhanced security posture remained, including keeping the city on high alert for potential threats.
