Smoke Rises From Pilot Mountain Park as Wildfire Grows

A fire burning in Pilot Mountain State Park in Surry County, North Carolina – about 25 miles from Winston-Salem – grew to 500 acres and was expected to increase in size on November 30, forestry officials told local media.

Randy Carlton Hunsucker posted video to Facebook showing the smoke from the fire as she drove north on US Highway 52 on Monday evening.

According to local media, Guilford County forest service ranger Jimmy Holt said no homes or private property were in danger as of Tuesday morning. Humans were believed to be the cause of the fire, which officials said could cover 900 acres as firefighters performed controlled burns in the area.

Officials issued a statewide outdoor burning ban effective from 5 pm Monday as the National Weather Service forecast a drop in humidity that could spread fire conditions. Credit: Randy Carlton Hunsucker via Storyful
