Yahoo Finance St Vincent Officials Warn of 'Extremely Dangerous' Volcanic Flows
“Extremely dangerous” volcanic material was flowing through a river in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, April 12, following an eruption by La Soufriere, officials said.
The National Emergency Management Organisation of St Vincent and the Grenadines urged residents not to gather near the Rabacca Dry River to view the pyroclastic flows coming from the volcano. Pyroclastic flows are fast-moving mixtures of lava, ash, and volcanic gas that “destroy everything in their path,” according to the United States Geological Survey.
Mark Jacobs said he filmed this footage of steam rising from the Rabacca River near Georgetown on Monday.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre said the Rabacca River serves as an “important drainage channel sweeping down from the volcano.”
